High Speed Update — Oct. 2: Spain and France

Spain: RENFE just opened the new 162.7 km (102 miles) high-speed line between Valladolid and León. Operating at up to 350 kph (219 mph), the new line cuts the fastest Madrid–León journey time by 44 minutes to 2 hours and 6 minutes. The new line also cuts times from Madrid substantially to Santander (3 hours 53 minutes), Oviedo, and Gijón.
France: SNCF is testing the newly completed TGV-Est segment that will close the final 106 km (66 mile) gap between the current high-speed endpoint at Baudrecourt and the edge of Strasbourg. When opened next April, the completed TGV-Est line will cut Paris-Strasbourg time down to 1 hour 48 minutes.
